This series relates primarily to SZ's periods of office as Honorary Secretary and then President of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).
SZ's association with the Society dated back to 1928, when he was appointed Prosector (Research Anatomist) to the Society. Surviving papers of that early period are chiefly to be found in Series SZ/SC and scattered through the general correspondence in Series SZ/GEN. Exceptions include the early correspondence with Julian Huxley, Dr R.E. Rewell, Dr G.M. Vevers, and Berthold Lubetkin in File SZ/13. The last mentioned comprises only two letters.
SZ's reign at Regent's Park, the headquarters of the Society and location of its Zoological Gardens in London, began in 1955 and almost immediately exploded into a confrontation with the Fellowship as he sought to re-invigorate the Society on a firm foundation of scientific rigour. It ended in almost as much controversy, with the Society facing a dire financial situation and experiencing a rapid turnover of senior officers.
In between was a period of sustained development, manifested in new buildings to house animals and birds, and the creation of major research establishments operating under the Society's aegis. Much of this was achieved thanks to SZ's assiduous cultivation of the interest of the Great, the Good, and the Glitterati in the Society and its work. SZ also initiated the setting-up of a staff pension fund, and widening of the range of awards made by the ZSL in recognition of contributions to science and to the work of the Society.
This series brings together large runs of files originating in SZ's offices at Birmingham University and London Zoo, into which a smaller number from the Cabinet Office and his office at UEA have been integrated.
Access is restricted.

This file relates to proposed changes to the composition of the Fellowship of the ZSL, and its privileges, that SZ put forward soon after assuming the Honorary Secretaryship. Key changes were the institution of a category of Scientific Fellow, with stringent criteria for admission, and the abolition of 'Fellows-only' admission to the Gardens on Sunday mornings. A protracted legal battle ensued, from which SZ and his supporters eventually emerged triumphant.

SZ/ZOO/11/53 Historical Notes etc., 1929, 1938, 1942, 1947, 1949
File SZ/ZOO/11/21 contains letters of protest from the public over the demise of the popular Indian Elephant, Diksie, for which some held SZ personally to account. File SZ/11/22 deals with preparations for, and proceedings at, a grand dinner attended by the Prime Minister (Harold Macmillan) and Leader of the Opposition (Hugh Gaitskell), among others. Ostensibly it commemorated the centenary of Prince Albert's Presidency of the ZSL, but appears to have been more a celebration of the conclusion of the legal dispute over the Charter and Byelaws and a gesture of thanks to those who had supported SZ. File SZ/ZOO/11/23 consists of photocopies of signed menu cards.
File SZ/ZOO/11/27 is substantial and refers to efforts to secure funding for a field study of Mountain Gorillas in Uganda, proposed by L.S.B. Leakey and M.W. Baumgartel. File SZ/ZOO/11/28 consists of the script of a film by Anglia TV's Survival team, and comments on it.
File SZ/ZOO/11/29 consists wholly of printed guides to German zoos, either collected by SZ during a visit to Germany in the 1930s or sent to him. It is complementary to Series SZ/SC. File SZ/ZOO/11/31 contains copies of legal opinions on various aspects of the ZSL's affairs.
File SZ/ZOO/11/32 is concerned with the cause of death of a ZSL employee, Jack Lester, who had taken part in various animal-collecting expeditions. Some of these expeditions had been filmed by the BBC and broadcast in the Zoo Quest series of programmes, and Lester's death excited a degree of press speculation.
File SZ/ZOO/11/35 deals with the marking of Society's 150th Anniversary, and in particular a reception attended by the Queen and Prince Philip (President of the ZSL), and the opening by HM of the Lion Terraces, construction of which had been funded by Charles Clore. A photocopy of the fanfare composed by Sir William Walton for this occasion is in Walton's file in Series SZ/GEN.
File SZ/ZOO/11/36 Refers to the inauguration of a veterinary service for the public for the treatment of exotic pets (hamsters, snakes, parrots and the like, but not dogs and cats). SZ/ZOO/11/45 relates to the programme of scientific symposia that SZ initiated in an effort "to alter the character of Scientific Meetings. Hitherto they have been the usual mixed bag of papers selected for publication in the 'Proceedings'. What we should like to do is to arrange every alternate programme as a symposium on some selected topic of interest" [letter, SZ to various UK Professors of Zoology, 19.4.59].
File SZ/ZOO/11/46 deals with the establishment of a resident Film and TV unit at Regent's Park. This followed an approach to SZ by Sidney Bernstein and the initial contract for operating it was held by his company, Granada TV. Granada used the unit to produce its Zoo Time and Animal ABC series for children. The file includes correspondence with the BBC, with whom the Zoo had previously had a connection, particularly with the Zoo Quest programmes, concerning arrangements when Granada's contract ended.
File SZ/ZOO/11/48 consists of a press-cutting and a typescript report of the inquest into the death of Anthony Murphy, a cub-scout mauled by a lion at Whipsnade on 2.6.56; the boy died of his injuries a few days later.
File SZ/ZOO/11/52 is a folder of correspondence with SZ's predecessors as Secretary to the ZSL, Julian Huxley and Sheffield Neave, and the Scientific Director, Dr Hindle. The topics are wide-ranging and were often sparked off by press reports. They also display something of a preoccupation with cross-species sexual relationships: rabbits and rats, cats and snakes; sailors and skate. File SZ/ZOO/11/53 contains a small quantity of items that appear to have been gathered together for a piece on the history of the ZSL. As well as extracts from 19th Century Minutes of Council, it contains two foolscap plans of proposed improvements to the gardens at Regent's Park, dated 1929, and a copy of the official Guide to the Gardens by Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell, also dated 1929 (see also File SZ/ZOO/12/11).

SZ/ZOO/12/11 Eirwen Owen: The Zoological Society of London, 1929-1976, 1984
These are files formerly held in SZ's office at UEA. They relate to SZ's brief, and rather unhappy, tenure of the Presidency of the Society, 1977-1984. The bulk of the content relates to the parlous financial circumstances in which the ZSL found itself at the beginning of the 1980s. The situation led to approaches to HMG for support, for the first time in the Society's history; an independent review of its activities; and the preparation of Operational and Business Plans. The remainder of the series is concerned with changes of personnel and organisation at the executive level following SZ's retirement as Secretary, the choice of a successor to SZ as President, and the direction in which he felt the ZSL should go after his retirement.
File SZ/ZOO/12/11 contains the drafts of a history of the ZSL, 1929-1976, by Eirwen Owen, with a small quantity of related correspondence and a draft index. It is possible that the material in File SZ/ZOO/11/53 is related.

The contents include correspondence with: Fellows, members of Council and committees and officers and staff of the ZSL and its Gardens at Regent's Park, London, and Whipsnade, Bedfordshire; scientists in the UK and overseas; members of the public; and benefactors both actual and potential.
Most of the files are slight, but those of Lord Buxton, Sir Charles Dalton, R.N. Fiennes, Miss Gay, Dr Harrison Matthews, Sir Terence Morrison-Scott, Sir Landsborough Thompson, and Miss Owen are substantial.
The miscellany of ZSL business that the contents deal with includes correspondence concerning: animal collecting (to which much of the correspondence with members of the Diplomatic Corps relates); animal breeding; applications for membership of the Society; nominations and appointments to Council and committees; staffing (including solicitation of employment); and fund-raising. Correspondence spanning the years 1957-1959 relates, as often as not, to the battle to change the Charter and Byelaws and complements that in Sub-file SZ/ZOO/8. The correspondence on scientific matters, including publications, is indicative of the significant role that the ZSL and its gardens play in zoological research.
As in Series SZ/GEN, there is a sprinkling of letters soliciting SZ's help or advice on the education and employment of offspring or other relatives, and as in Series SZ/BU, there is evidence of SZ's tendency to draw upon the skills of those around him to deal with personal matters: Mr Myers, Head of Works at Regent's Park, is thanked for "fixing up my hat-stand" [at SZ's London home]; while the services of Mr Stengelhofen, the ZSL's Architect, were deployed to sort out a leaky pipe there.
Conversely, SZ tapped the know-how of colleagues from his wider world in expediting ZSL business: Birmingham University's Classics expert, Professor Dudley, was asked to ensure that the Latin motto on the certificate issued to Foreign Fellows was grammatically correct; and via Jim van den Bergh of Unilever, the firm Christian Salvesen, which at the time conducted whaling operations in the South Atlantic, was prevailed upon to assist in the transportation of (live) elephant seals from South Georgia to the UK.
SZ also brought his interest in art to bear on matters zoological, as can be seen in the files of Elisabeth Frink and Henry Moore, both of whom were commissioned to design and execute ZSL awards. Efforts were also made to secure a Moore figure for the Regent's Park grounds.

The contents deal with the establishment of the Laboratory following an approach by SZ to Dr Harkavy of the Ford Foundation, who SZ already knew through a mutual interest in World population problems.
The Laboratory was established with an initial grant of $550,000 from the Ford Foundation over its first 15 years, "To continue selected aspects of work already carried out on the control of mammalian populations and to develop new projects that will form part of an integrated study of population dynamics and breeding biology in mammals". The Ford Foundation's chief interest at the time was the control of human population growth. By basing the Laboratory at London Zoo, SZ's initial proposal argued, its researchers would be able to exploit the richness of the ZSL's collections and its breeding records, which dated back to 1828.
Dr Peter Jewell was appointed the Senior Investigator and the earliest projects involved studies of St Kilda sheep, the Skomer Island vole, and African herbivores.
Files SZ/ZOO/14/4 and SZ/ZOO/14/5 include consultations on the topics that the Laboratory should study, and applications for fellowships. The Institute is sited at Regent's Park adjacent to the ZSL's Animal Hospital and Pathology Laboratories. The object of the Institute, as SZ explained at the first meeting of The Nuffield Institute Committee, the provisional governing body, on 19.1.60, "was to make full use of the valuable material derived from the various species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and other animals in the Society's Collections for purposes of comparative medical research". Dr L.G. Goodwin was appointed Director of the Institute.
The initial Nuffield Foundation Grant met £140, 000 of the estimated £350,000 needed to build and equip the Institute, and the ZSL contributed £110,000. An appeal was launched to raise the remaining £100,000, to be spent on capital equipment. In 1966 SZ successfully negotiated further funding from the Nuffield Foundation towards the running costs of the Institute.

The purpose of the Institute was to provide facilities to extend research into the physiological mechanisms of reproduction and related subjects beyond that already supported by the Ford Foundation. The ZSL was becoming active in animal breeding and the development of a gene bank of rare breeds, while its collections, which included 'free-range' colonies of wallabies and herds of Chinese water deer and muntjac, enabled studies to progress beyond the traditional confines of domestic and common laboratory animals. An application was submitted to the Wellcome Trust by the ZSL in 1960 for a grant towards the cost of a new building at Regent's Park to house the laboratories and staff needed; the grant, of £60,000, was awarded in 1961.
SZ/ZOO/16/3 contains files of correspondence with: Dr J. Michael Bedford; Sir Henry Dale; Dr F.H.K. Green; Dr John Hearn; Michael W. Perrin; and Dr I.W. Rowlands (the first Director of the Institute). The correspondence with Drs Bedford and Hearn (1979) relates to the appointment of a new Director.
